Why take AP Physics 1?

The course is as much about learning physics as it is developing high level analytical, technical and time management skills.
AP Physics 1 (APP1) is the first of two year-long courses, which are intensive, algebra based college-level physics. The APP1 Exam is considered the most difficult among all exams (46 % global pass rate) but in 2024 at MHS, 96% passed, 50% earned a 5. AP Physics 1 introduces Mechanics: Kinematics, Dynamics, Energy, Momentum, Rotational Motion, Fluids, in a dynamic, fast-paced, highly collaborative learning environment.
Course includes college-level lectures/demos, hands-on activities, collaborative exploratory labs where students develop procedures and process, and build semester projects (balloon cart and trebuchet).
The class culture is highly collaborative, with strong friendships built in the trenches of challenging labs, problems sets, and exam study.

Sophomores, Juniors, Seniors - note it is a major step up in rigor from Chemistry in the Earth System (sophomores take APP1 concurrently with Chem and do well because they aren't overloaded with other AP's).
Students who are strong in math, and enjoy problem solving. We employ lots of algebra and trigonometry in physics, but no calculus in this course.
Students who love science and are considering STEM fields such as engineering, physics, medicine, or just love understanding the way the world works.
Students who enjoy a challenge, moving at a fast pace, working hard, and learning more than they ever thought possible with classmates who are also eager learners.
